The Reef was established in 1994. In 1995 we made one of the very first Australian websites. It was for for Norwich Union and was followed by a flood of web construction, mainly for Federal Environmental Departments and a few large Corporations with their many divisions.
As a consequence we have several strong areas of expertise based on long experience; graphic design, multimedia graphics, illustration, interface design (planning), client liaison, local knowledge, data visualisation and of course, web programming.
Importantly we have developed a long view of web technology, its strengths and its shortcomings. We advise our clients on the latest technical possibilities, at the same time we will point out the limitations that a percentage of their audience may face, and how to plan a publishing strategy that will accommodate all.
What do you need?
Starting at the least demanding, if you require a brochure for your art, photos or products, or your small business, and you will want to update the site yourself then all you'll need is a basic setup. There are templates that would probably meet your requirements unless you need a complex design to create a unique "look". The templates allow for your individual banner design and can be customised to reflect your company's colours. Most small to medium sites today are constructed in this way.
If you are more concerned about the presentation of your site, for instance; an NGO that must be mindful of Government scrutiny for future funding and must present a professional and striking web presence to the world, then you will first need a good multimedia graphic designer. Then you will need an intelligent IT designer to plan your flow of information and advise on what's needed. Not just text and photos, but also insights into your target audience that will determine the way your information is presented, whether there should be an emphasis on video, for instance. All the rest is engineering.
Regarding engineering; we recommend and install a CMS "engine" with a good international reputation called ModX. It seems to be the most "office friendly" to update by the client or staff. ModX is an Open Source product; licence free, continually under development, powerful enough for a large site and it's great for us if we are asked to modify your templates because we can get at everything easily.
